Selene Trinity Band by Her haus

How to choose a wedding band

Your wedding band is the piece you'll actually wear the most. Through dishes, workouts, flights and every boring Tuesday. So it has to fit your hand and your life, not just the photos.

Quick answer: Pick a width that feels right on your hand, a metal that matches your engagement ring and a shape that sits well next to it. Order two to three months out.

Do wedding bands have to match?

You don't have to match. Plenty of couples pick bands that suit each of them and share one detail, like the same metal, finish or designer.

Working with one independent designer for both bands is an easy way to make them feel connected without making them identical.

Wedding band width and comfort fit

Width is measured in millimeters. Thin bands (around 1.5 to 2.5mm) feel delicate and stack well. Wider bands (4mm and up) feel bolder and wear in more.

Profile is the shape. Flat bands look modern and clean. Domed bands look classic. Comfort fit bands are rounded on the inside so they slide on easier and feel lighter on the finger.

Try widths on before you commit. A band that looks thin in a photo can feel different on your hand.

Wedding bands that fit your engagement ring

If there's an engagement ring, bring it into the decision.

Straight bands sit flush against low or bezel settings.

Contoured or curved bands wrap around a stone that sits low or sticks out.

A small gap works too. Some people like a little space between the two rings.

If both rings come from the same designer, ask them to design the band to sit with the ring you already have.

Best metal for a wedding band

Match the engagement ring metal if you're stacking. Different metals can rub against each other and wear down the softer one over time.

14k gold is a strong pick for daily wear. 18k gold is richer in color and a bit softer. Platinum is tough and naturally white. See our everyday gold guide for more.

Eternity bands vs plain bands

Plain bands are low maintenance and easy to resize. Eternity bands, with stones all the way around, look great but are hard or impossible to resize. Half eternity bands are a good middle ground.

Wedding band finishes

High polish shines. Matte or brushed finishes look softer and hide small scratches. Hammered textures add character and age well.

When to order your wedding band

Order early. Many independent bands are made to order. Get sized professionally, ideally later in the day when fingers are a bit bigger, and ask about resizing before you buy.

FAQ

When should you buy wedding bands?

At least two to three months before the wedding. Made-to-order bands take time, and you want room for resizing.

Should my wedding band match my engagement ring metal?

If you'll wear them stacked, yes. Mixed metals can rub and wear down the softer one.

Can you resize an eternity band?

Usually not, because stones go all the way around. Get sized carefully, or pick a half eternity band.

What's the most popular wedding band width?

Around 2mm for a delicate stack and 4 to 6mm for a bolder band. Try a few on before you decide.
